Douglas Wilmer was probably best known for his role as Nayland Smith in two of the Christopher Lee Fu Manchu films - The Brides Of Fu Manchu (1966), The Vengeance Of Fu Manchu (1968) - and for his role as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC's 1964 series, a role that he later reprised in The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother (1975). Wilmer made his debut in Men Of Sherwood Forest (1954) and went on to appear in The Battle Of The River Plate (1956), Richard III (1956), El Cid (1961), Cleopatra (1963), Jason And The Argonauts (1963), A Shot In The Dark (1964), One Way Pendulum (1965), Khartoum (1966), Cromwell (1970), Patton (1970), The Vampire Lovers (1970), The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad (1974), Revenge Of The Pink Panther (1978), Sword Of The Valiant (1982) and Octopussy (1983). On television, he guested episodes such as The Invisible Man, The Avengers, Journey To The Unknown, Tales Of Mystery and, prior to Space:1999, Wilmer had appeared in both of Gerry Anderson's previous live-action series: as Dr. Brünner in UFO 's E.S.P. and as Commander Whiting in The Protectors episode The Tiger And The Goat.
