Peter Cushing (Raan) was internationally reknowned for his many appearances in the Hammer horror films and as Sherlock Holmes in the 16-part 1969 BBC series. He made his film debut in The Man In The Iron Mask (1939) and followed this with a small role in the Laurel & Hardy feature A Chump At Oxford (1939). Over his fifty-year career he appeared in some 90 feature films including The Curse Of Frankenstein (1958), The Abominable Snowman (1957), Dracula (1958), The Hound Of The Baskervilles (1959), The Mummy (1959), The Hellfire Club (1960), Dr. Terror's House Of Horrors (1964), She (1965), Dr. Who And The Daleks (1965), Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 AD (1966), Night Of The Big Heat (1967), The House That Dripped Blood (1970), Twins Of Evil (1971), Tales From The Crypt (1971), Asylum (1972), At The Earth's Core (1976), Star Wars (1977), Arabian Adventure (1978) and Top Secret! (1983). On television, he made guest appearances in The Avengers, The Zoo Gang, Orson Welles' Great Mysteries, The New Avengers, Hammer House Of Horror and Tales Of The Unexpected. Cushing's final film was Biggles (1985) - after finishing work on this, he retired from acting. He died in 1994, aged 81.
